1 | Don't understand Jesus's view on alcohol | Prov 20:1 | Mathew | 85248
John, This is not an attack on your personal relationship with God. But for being a person who defends christian liberty, you seem uneasy to tell me that the Word of God says that its alright for ME to have a little herb. From what I've read so far I'm very interested in seeing what MY liberties are. But it seems to me as if your seeking support from other christians; so you don't feel guilty. Other wise you could tell me if the Bible condones getting a buzz. You tell me to not put confidence in my flesh. Is this a statement for the christian with no liberties? Is your flesh more spiritual than mine? Is not all flesh weak? As a person who DEFENDS christain liberties, tell me if its okay for me to "pet the serpent" so to speak. To be a defender of this kind of liberty seems to put alot of blood on your hands to the people that beleive you. Only IF your wrong. So tell me, does God condone getting a Buzz? Yes/NO I know I've shown no scripture for what I've said,But I'm trying to "keep it real" on this one. Matt |

Dear Matt, if you want to "keep it real", then stick to the verses that deal with the topic. It is the Word that IS real, not the opinions of men. John Reformed |

3 | Don't understand Jesus's view on alcohol | Prov 20:1 | Mathew | 85369
John, You totaly side stepped all I've asked of you. You being the defender of christian liberties and all. But I do have a scripture for you with a question maybe you will answer. The Bible speaks of not even "looking" upon wine, yet alone exercising our liberties. God also says you can drink deadly poisons and it won't harm you. Do we as christians exercise this liberty on a daily basis?: Prov.23:31-35 "Do not LOOK on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly; At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things. Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying: 'They have struck me, but I was not hurt; They have beaten me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?' " My question is in order to actually obey Gods Word, don't all christians have to drink blindfolded then? |

Dear Matt, I actually wrote a reply to your prev. post but decided to erase it. The reason I did is because my answer contained mere human wisdom and I do not want to be found wise beyond that which is written. After all this is a Bible Study Forum and not a debating society. To get the full meaning of Prov. 23 31-35, we must also include vs. 29 and 30: Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long over wine, Those who go to taste mixed wine. In the same Chapter the father warns his son: Prov 23:20,21 "Do not be with heavy drinkers of wine, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe one with rags." The point that the verses cited in chapt 23 are plain to see and they agree precisely with my own belief. DO NOT HANG OUT WITH DRUNKS OR PEOPLE WHO EAT LIKE PIGS OR FOLLOW THEIR WICKED EXAMPLE. STAYING HIGH ALL DAY WILL PUT YOU IN THE STREETS. (My paraphrase of vs 20,21) To believe that a glass ot two of wine, (even taken on an empty stomach!) will cause a person to experience that which is described in chapt.23 is to deny reality. You suggested we get real. That's cool, I'm all for it. But we must center our discussion around "What saith our Lord?". Peace and Grace, John Reformed |

John R, I have much respect for your biting of the tongue. I have much respect for your knowledge on this subject. It was unfair of me to say some of the things I said. I apologize. I agree about your points on this verse, I didn't consider the text in its context. I know that we have many liberties as Christians. For instance the Bible says in Gen 1:29 "And God said, Behold! I have given you every herb seeding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree seeding seed; to you it shall be for food." But does this mean that we "should" eat every herb seeding seed which is upon the earth. Some plants and herbs can kill you easily if consumed. Im sure I have the liberty to have DRUGS from the doctors if NEED them. Or wine If I NEED it when Im older to dull the pain of my aching bones. Although I still beleive it's a sin to drink socially, I would in no way be affended by other Christians drinking. My "old" Church had drinking socials, which isnt good seeing half the congragation are EX-drug addicts, and drunkards. Plus what about the drunkards who come in that day. I just can't see condoning drinking any more than I would smoking the herb that God said I could have. Thanks for the Peace and Grace Matt |

Dear Matt, "Pot" or "herb" are not dealt with in Scripture, however, intoxication is strongly condemned throughout the Bible. Having had more experience with hallucigenic drugs than I care to remember, I can say from my own experience that one does not smoke a joint for the taste :-( . It is also true that the potency of unregulated drugs can vary widely. One may get merely a mild buzz on one joint or he may wind up in La-la Land (and I don't mean Los Angeles). As christians we are suject to the commands Of our King; Our Lord and God Jesus Christ. 1 Tim 3:2 An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, Given the qualifications,it is impossible for me to see a pot-head qualifying for the position of overseer. But that does not excuse the man in the pew either, for we are called to imitate the godly example of our leaders as they imitate Christ. Paul urged the Corinthians to "Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ (1 Cor 11:1). John |
