Another note: The apostles had powers that we do not have today. They spoke in tongues, performed miracles, and even rose the dead. So, if it is as you say, that we are to still speak in tongues and perform miracles, how come none of us can do the other things that the apostles have done, like, raise the dead? Right after Jesus ascended to Heaven, the apostles went and did as he commanded. In the book of acts, we read about their miracles, speaking in tongues, healing the sick, and raising the dead. Christ gave them the power to do so. But now, we have the Word, and the proof, written in the Bible. Those miracles were done at that time to facilitate the completion of the Book. And, as the book was to be completed soon, Paul noted that these things would stop, but that love would continue. Also, in the book of revelations, we have a solemn warning: Revelation 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: |

Johnk, I agree with you 100 percent about what you said concerning the gift of speaking in tongues. They were show gifts that preceded the completion of the cannon of Scripture. It is even shown that Paul lost his gift of healing because he had to leave Trophimus in Miletum sick. 2 Tim. 4:20 Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick. Obviously Paul couldn't heal him of his sickness. Paul also made a statement in I Cor. 1 Cor. 13:9-10 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. The word perfect comes to us from the Koine Greek word (TELEION) and is better translated completion and is in the neuter gender and is a reference to the culmination of God's Word which we call the Bible. It is evident that Paul was cognoscente of the fact that there would be a assembling of God's word into a single unit of scrolls. The only part of your statement that I think would be stretching a point is the plagues that are found in the book of revelation, with reference to prophecy of (this book), singular, the last book of the 66 that we have. I am glad to see that there is understanding of God's Word. May the Lord enrich you even more! I am always glad to see it when other family members in Christ don't read His Word superficially. As far as the warning in revelations, I assumed it to mean God's Word as a whole. But so long as we all understand what you have just said, the book is complete. And I thank you for caring enough to even reprove my stretching statement of the warning. That's the love we all must show each other. Being corrected is a blessing, and is a good sign of God's love. |
