|I believe that EdB gave a very good definition of a cult. I would like to add the following.
Accoding to Dr. Stan Fleming of Gatebreakers ministry at a recent workshop I attended the 5 basic characteristics of a cult are any group has:
1) a new revelation that supercedes the Bible.
2) redefined Christian terminology.
3) Exclusitivity - They are the only ones with the truth
4) a authoritavity leader - tense, strong willed, charasmatic (not meaning spirit filled)
5) strict, unreasonable rules, and harsh dicipline

|862||What are 'Ancient Paths?'||Jer 6:16||prayon||2115|
|According to the International Bible Commentary the ancient path is defined as this: "The basis of God's relationship with His people is still the ancient path of His law expressed in their history and religion".|
|863||When God himself has selected Moses to f||Ex 4:24||prayon||2111|
|It is my understanding according to the New International version footnotes that God sought to kill him because he had not followed his commands and circumsized his son possibly because they were living in Minian, or maybe because he was not too familiar with God's law. It could also of been that because Zipporah was a Medianite she opposed the circumcision. I believe that this might of been the case in part because as soon as Moses became ill she knew exactly what to do and circumcised the son which proves that they had definitly discussed the matter. Moses however could not fulfill the position God had planned for him as the deliverer of Isreal until he had fulfilled God's covenant of circumcision. Under Old Testament law failing to circumcise your son meant to remove yourself and your family from God's blessing. He also learned that messing with God was even more dangerous than messing with the Pharaoh.|
|864||When was the Holy Spirit first given?||Acts 2:1||prayon||2110|
|It is my understanding that in John 20:21-22 that Jesus breathed the Holy Spirit upon His disciples so that they could carry on His work.
At Pentecost the Holy Spirit desended upon ALL bellievers in the form of "divided tongues, as of fire" to fulfill what John the Baptist said about baptizing with fire (Luke 3:16) and what Joel had prophesied in Joel 2:28-29 about the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
|865||How can we assist our youth?||Bible general Archive 1||prayon||2108|
|Dear Brent, I am mother of three (23,22, and 14) and a grandmother of two. Having been in the military and a traveling nurse we have been to many churchs. I hope I will be able to give some suggestion that will be helpful.
First - I believe that the most important thing is to pray for youth leaders who will meet the teens at their level and be accepting of them the way they are - no matter how they dress, how much jewelry they wear, what color their hair is or whether it is neatly combed or standing up in spikes. Jesus never cared how someone looked and neither should we. Youth today are seeking love and acceptance. Many don't get either of these at home unfortunitly. The need of these things often is what leads them to gangs and drugs. The church has to be able to meet those needs. Youth leaders have to be able to sincerly care for them and love them. No one can recognize a false front as fast as a teen. They also have to know that they CAN TRUST the leader. That no matter what problem they have they can go to the leader and talk about anything and it will be kept in strict confidence. Usually kids go to friends for advice because they have no one they can trust - wouldn't it be much better if they had someone they could trust that would give them Godly advice?
2nd - You have to make the teens feel a part of the church. They need to be needed. Let them do nursery duty (we always have one teen and one adult), let them usher - (I have seen some 8 and 9 year olds usher better than adults), let them help teach the little ones, let them read the scripture sometimes or say the prayers. Every 5th Sunday of the month we have Youth Sunday. The youth plan the service (with an adult to oversee), pick the speaker, do the praise and worship and run the service. You will be amazed at what they are capable of.
3rd - You have to make church and bible study interesting to them. They have to be able to relate to the sermon or teaching. Nothing can turn my kids off of a church faster than not being able to understand or relate to what is being said.
4th - You have to give them music they enjoy, that will keep them coming back. I like some of the old hymns but very, very few youth do. They want to hear rock or rap or gospel. I used to hate rock but I have learned to enyoy it - still don't like alternative though. :o).
5th - You said you wanted to get ideas for church, bible study and youth activites. The best thing is to ASK THEM. They know what they like, what they enjoy. Let them plan their activites. Let them do the fund raisers. Teach them to be responsible. Then support them in whatever they decide whether it be a concert (just take some earplugs and go), skating, a street dance, a lock-in (a big slumber party at the church), or a camping trip. There are many 2-3 day long music festivals during the summer such as Creation or Sunshine. Pick the closest one and suggest a short trip. One thing our church did was to have youth "vs" adult forums where youth could voice their concerns and there not be any repurcussions afterward. The parents never heard what was said. Also do it vice versa where the parents can voice their concerns and the youth have to respond to those concerns.
You also mentioned young adults. They need the same things plus more, especially single parents.
One of the main problems I experienced as a single parent is that my sons had no one they could go to for fatherly advice and guidance. No role model. This is a very big problem of today. I think that for every one parent family where the father has no involvement or negative involvement the church should step in and fill this very important role. If it is a single mom then some man from the church needs to step in and spend time with the children. If it is a single father then a woman needs to step in and spend time with the children. Something similar to the big brother/big sister idea. There must be consistance though. There are lots of other needs for a single parent but that is another issue.
I don't remember who said it but they said the youth of today WILL be our leaders of tomorrow. Teach them to care, to listen, to be responsible. Many unfortunetly don't get these lessons at home anymore. I hope this has helped you because our youth are the most important thing in the church.
|866||What does this verse mean?||Heb 10:26||prayon||2035|
|I believe that it tells us that if you are made aware that some action you do is a sin but choose to continuously ignore the teaching you are rejecting Christ and God's most precious gift. There is but one way to salvation and that is through Jesus Christ. He is the only way to forgiveness and eternal life. When you turn your back on Him there only remains the "fearful prospect of judgement and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries" (Hebrews 10:27). One way this can be applied today is if you are in a religion that does not believe in Jesus Christ and you reject the truth, and choose to stay where you are at, you have closed the only door to salvation there is.|
|867||Attitude?||1 Cor 4:1||prayon||2033|
|I believe we should have an attitude of awe, respect, thanksgiving, and joyous celebration. God's mysteries are His words to us. They are what our salvation is based on. We should care for all of His word deeply, holding it close to our hearts. We should do our best to see that it is not twisted or put down. We should guard what has been entrusted to us with our lives if need be. We should be ready to share at all times as He instructed us to do. We should be stewards over His word as He would do Himself.|
|868||Is astrology forbidden?||Bible general Archive 1||prayon||1986|
|Abomination; abominable: very hateful, detestable;
Abominable is the strongest condemnatory language used by God in the entire bible. It is this word that He uses to describe astrology. Deut. 18:9-14 Moses warns us about unholy practices stating that anyone "who practices divination, or is a soothsayer" (one who has spiritual insight or is able to foretell events), "or an augur" (one who foretells future events by interpreting omens), "or a sorcerer" (wizard, conjurer, or magician), "or one who casts spells, or one who consults ghosts or spirits, or seeks oracles the dead is. For whoever does these things is abomination to the Lord". Astrology and horoscopes fall under these categories. Again in Gal. 5:19 Paul warns us again against the works of the flesh; included in these is sorcery. See also the commands for daily life in Leviticus 19,
verses 26 abd 31 again warn us of such things.
|869||Steward of the mysteries of God?||1 Cor 4:1||prayon||1957|
|A steward is an overseer of something, it can also be a person who is entrusted with the caretaking of something that is not his own whether it is a house, a task, business affairs or in a metaphorical sense in relation to the divine mysteries as referred to in 1 Corinthians 4:1. The mysteries you are referring to are the secrets of the bible that are hidden or beyond human understanding. There are many things that we are told about in the bible that have not happened such as the time of Jesus return. It is all of these mysteries that are told of in the bible we are are "stewards" over.|

|871||Jesus says about children being sacred?||Bible general Archive 1||prayon||1954|
|I don't know of anywhere in the bible that specifically says that children are sacred however Jesus mentions children numerous times in the New Testament in ways that we can know of their importance to Him. Jesus warns us in Matthew 18:6 that if anyone puts a stumbling block in front of a child it would truly be better for that person if a millstone were tied around his neck and he were thrown into the depths of the sea. In chapter 19 Jesus said not to stop the little children coming to Him because it is to them that the kingdom of heaven belongs. Ephesians 6:4 tells us not to provoke your children to anger. In Mark 9:37 Jesus took a child into His arms and said whoever welcomes a child in my name welcomes me. Many places in the bible Jesus tells of the importance of children and how we must care for and protect them. I can't find the scripture but the bible also tells us that if we don't raise our children in His ways we will have to answer to Him. I hope this answers your questions.|
|872||What are the seven seals?||Revelation||prayon||1419|
|Paul in his vision on the island of Patmos states that he "saw in the right hand of the one seated on the throne a scroll written on the inside and on the back it was sealed with seven seals." (Rev 5:1) The seven seals were all forms of judgement and are the first of three seven-part judgements. Each seal is opened by Christ and sets in motion the events that will an end to human history. The contents of the scroll reveal mans corrupt and perverted morals and show Gods authority over the events of human history. The seven seals contain the following:
Seal 1: A white horse with the rider carrying a bow and a crown. It came out to conquer.
Seal 2: A bright red horse - it's rider was allowed to take peace from the world.
Seal 3: A black horse with the rider holding a pair of scales in its hand. The scale symbolizes a scarcity of food.
Seal 4: A pale green horse, its rider's name was Death and Hades followed with him. They will kill 1/4 of the worlds population.
Seal 5: Tells of the cries of the slain tribulation martyrs. They were each given a white robe and told to wait a little longer.
Seal 6: Opening of this seal will produce a mighty earthquake, the moon will become red, the stars of the sky will fall, and the sun will darken. The sky will vanish and every mountain and island will be moved.
Seal 7: There will be 1/2 hour pause before the judgement of the 7th seal. 7 trumpets were given to 7 angels standing before the throne. Another angel came and was given a great quantity of incense to offer with the prayers of the saints. Then the angel took the censer filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth and there was thunder, lightning and an earthquake.
Seals 1-6 are found in Revelations 6, Seal 7 is found in Revelation 8.
|873||Who is the Bride of Christ?||Revelation||prayon||1417|
|Jesus Christ refered to the faithful church as his bride in the New Testament.
The Old Testament prophets (including John the Baptist), the tribulation martyrs, and the hosts of Heaven are the guests of the bridegroom.
|874||read and understand the question||Revelation||prayon||1396|
|I have done a lot of studying of the book of Revelations. I have found that the best book is by Hal Lindsey. He explains it verse by verse in great detail. I am sorry but I cannot remember the name. I am sure any Christian bookstore will be able to tell you.|
|875||Tongues,where scriptures||Acts 2:1||prayon||1369|
|On the day of Pentecost,as Jesus stated, He sent the Holy Spirit to the disciples. "Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them and rested on each of them. They were at this time filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in tongues. In 1 Cor 14 Paul teaches about the gift of tongues. He states that those who speak in tongues do not talk to others but to God and nobody understands them.
(v.2) and that the speech is unintelligible (v.9).
In 1Cor.13:1 Paul speaks of talking with the tongues of men and angels which indicates that languages other than the human language may be inspired by the Holy Spirit. Paul also lists tongues as one of the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit (1Cor 12:10).
In Mark 16:17, Mark tells us that Jesus gave us a promise - "and those who believe; by using my name will speak in tongues".
In Eph 6:18 Paul tells us to pray in the Spirit in every prayer and supplication.
In Romans 8:26 - 27 Paul states that "the Spirit helps us in our time of weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we should" and that very Spirit intercedes for the saints with sighs too deep for words." God understands what we don't.
In Isaiah 28:11 Isaiah prophesies concerning tongues. He tell us that "He will speak with an alien tongue".
