I think your understanding of the "Name" in Matthew 28:18-20, as referring to Jesus, is mistaken. Many of the early church understood this as clearly Trinitarian in nature. There is only one God, hence there is only one Name. But there are three distinct Persons in the eternal Godhead, hence the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Indeed, one of the clearest Scriptural illustrations of this point can be found in the account of Jesus' own baptism. In Matthew 3:16-17 we read, "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." All three Persons of the blessed Trinity were simultaneously present at Jesus' baptism. The Father spoke from heaven, the Holy Spirit descended from heaven to earth, and the Son was incarnate as Jesus in the Jordan river. Now lets look at the letter Paul wrote to the Corinthians. KJV 2 Corinthians 13:14 14. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. This scripture is virtually undisputed letter of the Apostle Paul dating to around A.D. 55: the Letter is Trinitarian in form and has ever since been a part of Christian worship tradition." Tho I dont doubt from my studies in Acts that some people were not baptized in Jesus' name for from what I can understand they were. But I also believe that according to scripture that this wasn't a disbelief in the Trinity and that there is no proof that in Jesus' name was the only way they were baptized. It is my belief that the early church also baptized in " The name of the Father, and the Son(Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. One thing is for sure cajam, when I first started studing this it took me on a longer study than I had expected and that when we see that God is leading us closer to Him its all worth while. As far as I can tell we can't forsake what the bible says and take it in part but as a whole it is very clear that there is a Trinity. So I find myself doing what is written in the later part of this note as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19 God Bless |

I have studied more on this subject. It said that when there was a new teaching or something new being declared that the people would want to know by whose authority this teaching was. Therefore when the disciples were saying repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus that they were proclaiming by the authority of Jesus. Such being the case in every scripture I read like Acts 2:38. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. This has further helped my understanding of the sometimes confusing teaching of baptizing only by the name Jesus. God Bless |
