Colin, respectfully I submit that Christianity is a religion and it is, I fully believe, the true religion; whereas, the cult known as the Jehovah's Witnesses is, in my view, one of the many false religions that exist in the world. John Calvin's magnum opus, "The Institutes of the Christian Religion" is not misnamed. Now and again I hear someone disavow that Christianity is a religion, and I've read it several times on this forum; yours is not the first. I don't know who put it into people's heads that Christianity is not a religion. It easily fits both the first and second definitions of 'religion' that appear in Webster's Collegiate, viz., (1) the service and worship of God, and (2) commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance. Colin, I don't ask you to defer to me on this because I majored in English in school but because I'm right! And I do ask you to defer to Merriam- Webster who majored in words :-) By the way, if Christianity is not a religion, then what is it? ..... My guess is that those who put the taboo on calling Christianity a religion may be doing so because they are confusing the word 'religion' with 'religiosity' and 'religious' with 'religiose.' 'Religiosity' and 'religiose' do carry a shade of meaning that is characterized by excessive religious sentimentality or obtrusiveness, having much the same relationship to religion as piety does to humility. --Hank | ||||||

10-4, by definition you're right, and by James' measure of religion: Jam 1:26 "If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless." (NASB), you have biblical support. And Webster: (definition 4) "Any system of faith and worship. In this sense, religion comprehends the belief and worship of pagans and Mohammedans, as well as of christians; any religion consisting in the belief of a superior power or powers governing the world, and in the worship of such power or powers. Thus we speak of the religion of the Turks, of the Hindoos, of the Indians, etc., as well as of the christian religion. We speak of false religion, as well as of true religion." So you can't sever Chritianity, the "Way", from a definition which includes Scientology, Islam, Brahma Koumaris, peyote cults and JWs. I didn't know there was a taboo. I stand corrected, Hank.
