You recieve the Holy Spirit, when you accept Jesus Christ into your heart as your personal Lord and Savior by Confession of your Sin, Believing that Jesus died to take your sins upon himself, and Announce to others your faith in the Lord. Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; Rom 8:15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!" The Baptism of the Holy Spirit which is seperate (Acts 19:2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.") and means that you have been fully emersed in the Holy Spirit just as Baptized means that fully emersed in water. The first evidence that you have been fully emersed in the Holy Spirit is that you will speak in a tongue that you have not learned and do not understand. Acts 2:4. Five times in the Book of Acts it talks about people who recieved the Baptism of or in the Holy Spirit and 3 of those times it spacifically mentions that they spoke in tongues. It does not say it about the gentiles but when Peter is telling the Apostles about it later he says they spoke in tongues just like we did at the beginning and we Know from 1 Corinthians 12 and 14 that Paul made a habit of speaking in tongues. He is the other case not spacifacally mentioned in Acts. So it was the common practice of the early church for people to speak in tongues as evidence that they had been baptized in the Holy Spirit. This is not to be the only evidence however and this experienc should in fact be brought into question is no further evidence appears. There should come with it a greater prayer life as you allow the holy Spirit to pray through you when you don't know how to pray. Rom 8:26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; It should also be accompanied by a greater desire to share the Word of God with others through personal testimony of what God is doing in our lives. Acts 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." As Spirit filled believers we are to be witnesses for the Gospel of Jesus Christ whever we find ourselves. Just like salvation, the Baptism of or in the Holy Spirit is recieved by Faith in Jesus Christ, who is the giver of the gift. |

Hello revpete, How exactly did you arrive at your conlusions? With all due respect, you make a number of assertions with which I'm not in agreement. 1. What scriptures backs up your statement that "Baptized means that fully emersed in water." 2.What other evidence proves "that Paul made a habit of speaking in tongues." Instances from 2 Chapters in 1 Cor. hardly qualifies as a habit? 3. How would you deal with 1 Cor. 12:13, which explicitly tells us, "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit." 4. Do you view the Book of Acts as a doctrinal blue-print for the Church? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

1. Batized, Batism come from the greek word baptidzo which means to emerse. You may look it up in any greek english dictionary. 2, Paul himself said I speak in tongues more than you all. 3. As belivers we are all emersed into the body of Christ regardless of our backgrounds when we come to accept Jesus Christ as our savior and Lord even pentecostals and non-pentecostals. Our love for one another is the evidence of our salvation. So we must learn to love even those we disagree with. 4. I see the book of acts as giving us a lot of information about the early church and love to see when the modern day church puts these things into action. A few of my best friends are baptist preachers and we have talked about these things and in the spirit of friendship have agreed that we are all believers in spite of our differences over things that are not nearly as important as do you know Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. We strive to make it difficult for anyone from our communities to die without first hearing a clear presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. More will be accomplished for the kingdom of God if we will keep that in focus and do less bickering about pet doctrines among ourselves |

Scripture ... Mar 7:4, Luk 11:38, Act 22:16, Heb 9:10, Rev 19:13 ... God's day to you, revpete79, and welcome to the SBF, On your first point, I am pasting an old post of mine. Let me add something you may never hear from someone who grew up as a "Baptist" ... the word we translate baptize, baptism, et al may be better washing - our sins are washed away inwardly (Acts 22:16), so we need to show that our sins are washed away. Yes, I go back to the original for my support. Verses clearly shows that the word "washing" is a correct translation. Furthermore, there is no implication of dipping or immersion. For example, "tables" (Mark 7:4) are not dipped or immersed to clean them. These passages, therefore, show us that in the Bible the word "baptize" means to wash or cleanse or purify. Luke 11:38, the word "wash" is the Greek word baptizo which also ordinarily is translated as "baptize." Likewise, in Hebrews 9:10 we of divers washings. Revelation 19:13, where a derivative of the word bapto is used, as well as all of the other verses where we find the words bapto or embapto, give us no clue as to the meaning of the word "baptism." I have more. Do a serach for [bapt table divers] Searcher |
