Greetings Angel! Don't take me wrong my friend! I believe in Biblical submission. But, I think that the concept of 'obedience' has been read into the term to a greater extent than the word merits. To me, Eph. 5:21 is evidence of this. The same word is used in the same immediate context as the passage dealing with marriage. Yet, the word clearly does not indicate a 'I said this, so you had better obey' relationship. To me, the word (and the context) stresses willing and loving servanthood. All Christians, in all of their relationships, should seek to serve others. The wife should serve the husband. The husband should serve the wife. The child should serve the parent. The parent should serve the child, ect.... This word is used throughout Eph. 5, so I can't see how it would be taking it out of context. :-) In fact, I would argue that everything that follows Eph. 5:21 is a detailed description of what Paul meant in 5:21, not a change of subject. I would like to think you're on the right track, but then I thought I'd contribute. In my opinion, God looks at this issue rather simply and expects us as His children to look at it just as simply. Since the very first, from Cain and Able to King Saul, all the way through the Law of Moses and the rest of the Bible, it's always been a simple matter of obedience or submission to God's way. Saul found that out, just like Cain, Nadib and Abihu, Ananias and Saphira did and many, many others. Each person has to make up his own mind by reading the whole Bible and drawing his own conclusion. Is it going to be God's way or does a person insist on seeing it his way and offer God a counter proposal? Anything else other than God's way is unacceptable. Now that's NOT to say that there is no Grace, Mercy or Forgiveness for indeed, thanks be to God there is, but God doesn't want us taking it for granted. We must do our dead level best to obey as much as we can, then His Grace will cover the rest. Just like we as parents want our kids to obey us in their role as obedient children, God wants the same. Just like Jesus portrayed with his approval of little children coming to Him. There's nothing we could possibly do to come up with to substitute for simple obedience to God's Will. Would you not agree with that? Hoping for a positive response and blessings to you. Country Girl |
