1 | Being filled w/ the Spirit mean tongues? | Acts 2:4 | Searcher56 | 148259
Susan, I agree with you that Acts 2:4 shows the initial time people were filled with the Spirit after His going to heaven that people spoke in tongues. However,Cornelius and company in Acts 11, is the only other time where we see speaking in tongues at salvation. Luke 1:41 and 67 shows me two people filled with the Spirit - no tongues are mentioned ... also, at least once in the OT (Exo 31:3) ... plus Acts 4:8 and other NT passages don't mention the speaking in tongues when one is filled with the Spirit. Greetings Searcher, Acts 8:18 it says that Simon "saw" that these people received the Spirit. What did he see that proved to Him that these people received the Spirit? Also there is no Luke 1:41 or 67 - what scripture did you mean? prayon |

Posts 148263 148264 148265 148269 148489 Susan, Please go to these posts and answer the questions. Enter Luke 1:41 under Translation Book Chapter:verse ... to see both Luke 1:41 or 67 Since the Bible doesn't say what Simon "saw" (not "heard") in Acts 8:18, I will not guess. I'd say it would be hard to say He saw them speak in tongues. I think Dr. Luke would have been inspired to write "heard". Steve |

The bible says Simon "saw". We know that the Holy Spirit can not be seen with the physical eye since He is a Spirit. But he "saw" or witnessed the power of speaking in tongues If we look at Acts 19:6. (And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied)and Acts 22:4 (And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance) we know that with the laying on of hands and the receiving of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost) that they spoke in tongues. So what Simon "saw" was the evidence of the Holy Spirit which is speaking in tongues. prayon ps I agree it would of been much easier if he would of used the word heard instead of saw.... |

Susan, Is the only evidence of the Holy Spirit speaking in tongues? Go to post 148598 for Acts 8:18 and what Simon SAW. Go to post 148600 for Acts 8:18 and laying of hands. I presume you mean Acts 2:4 not Acts 22:4. Yes, that is one of the three times where speaking in tongues is mentioned. Here we have people speak before the message. The other two times (Acts 11 and 19) it was by those who heard the message. All the other times when the gospel was presented, we see no proof that anyone spoke in tongues. I have continued to find expections - and holes in your arguments. Steve |

Steve, Greetings brother.People cause themselves no end of controversey and confusion because they dont exercise basic principles of biblestudy. There was a reason in Acts 2:4 for God working things the way he did.The speaking in tongues was evidence to the people that Peter and the Apostles were of God,that what they doing was divinely empowered.God could have just as easily did this in private but that would have meant nothing to anyone else but the apostles.People had to have irrefutable evidence and pentecost was that evidence. Now with that said we can go to Acts 2:38 it cleary states that we recieve the Holy Spirit at salvation. We have no more or less of Gods Spirit now than we recieved at salvation. God did the whole job then and continues work shape and mold our character as we seek to walk with Him and live his Word daily.I'ts simple, not always easy but simple. Keep pitching bro, lionheart |

8 | Could you expand on this? | Acts 2:4 | lionheart | 148615
Thanx bro, In reference to post 148606. In (1Corinthians 12:7-12) Paul references the manifestations of Gods Spirit or gifts as some may refer them as. Understanding when Paul wrote this and to whom and why becomes vital to our understanding of them today. (1Corinthians 13:8-10) I've heard several different views of this passage I have a clue where this is going but my understanding here isnt rock solid, maybe you could expand a little on this. In Christ, lionheart |
