1 | Why not Baptize as Jesus said to? | Acts 19:5 | Taleb | 107939
Punkiedo, according to the definitions of the word ‘name’, when Jesus’ cousin John baptized people, whose “name” did he use? In Acts 19, a dozen believers, asked about their baptism, told Paul that they had been baptized “unto John’s baptism”. They were quickly re-baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. We need to understand this tells us that they were baptized under the “authority” of Jesus' name. “Name” (what people call you) is only part of what the word signifies. A police officer shouting, “Stop in the NAME of the law”, gives us a wonderful example of what Scripture is trying to convey in Act 19:7. Jesus said, “I give you authority to … in my name”. That authority comes the same way jurisdictions have the authority to give authority to a policeman, equipping him with the "power" to be able to “stop” people's cars merely by holding up a hand. If you notice what Acts 19:13,15 shares about the “name of Jesus”, it will help you understand what I am saying. “But certain traveling Jews who practiced exorcism undertook to name over those that had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, ‘We exercise you by Jesus whom Paul preaches..’ But answering the evil spirit said, ‘I know Jesus, and I comprehend Paul, but who are you?’” Nothing at all would happen if I shouted to anybody, “Stop in the name of the law.” I have NO authority to do so, is the reason. The “name of the law” (notice "law" is singular) distributes “authority” concerning ALL laws, much the same as Jesus does to His people. And it is that authority that empowers people to be baptized. People don't respond to a policeman's command with, "Which law? There are thousands of laws." Acts doesn't say, "And Paul (or Peter, or Matthew) said, 'I baptize you in the name of Jesus.'" Happy New Year, Taleb |

2 | Why not Baptize as Jesus said to? | Acts 19:5 | punkiedo | 107941
In Acts 2:38 it says then peter said unto them repent and be baptized EVERY ONE OF YOU in the NAME of JESUS CHRIST. I want the name applied to my life. And jesus was baptized unto JOHN's baptism at that time. To me when he said that he had to fulfil all righteousness that tells me he wanted US to see HOW IMPORTANT baptism was. When a lady gets married she is suppose to take on her husband's name. Furthermore, the importance of the name dates all the way back. The rabbais would dunk their followers under water and as they were going down they would say their name over them and they would be known as the follower of that rabbai from then on. If you are baptized in the name of the father son and holy ghost. Who's follower are you? They rebaptized Johns disciples. Baptism comes from the greek word baptismo..which means submerse. Submerse in the dictionary means to put under water. So they were put under water in the name of the Lord Jesus. |

Punkiedo, I’m sorry, but your note provided more questions than answers. For instance: What made you write – “when a lady gets married she is suppose to take on her husband's name”? Is there are a Bible verse that tells a woman she is suppose to? From my experience of living in the Middle East, the wife keeps her last name and the children take on the mother’s last name. Also, we have ministered with certain tribes in Latin America where their children also take on their mother’s name. Too often, we "think" our way of life is God-ordained. That’s one reason why the good ol’ USA is so unwelcomed in the world. One verse that contradicts that particular thought of yours is Gen. 2:34 “That’s why a MAN WILL LEAVE HIS own father and mother He will cleave to his wife, and the two become one flesh.” Who did it say will "leave" HIS family? Your statement “And jesus was baptized unto JOHN's baptism at that time …,” reminded me of Mark 10:39 “…and Jesus said to His disciples, ‘You shall drink from the cup from which I must drink. And you will be baptized just as I must!’ According to the above verse, were Jesus and His disciples re-baptized, or was Jesus referring to one of the OTHER baptisms that Heb 6:2 lists as “doctrine of baptisms”? (Note “baptisms” are in the plural.) Are we to use the "name of Jesus" in our dealings with the other baptisms too? I noted you dropped a few IMPORTANT words in your sentence “If you are baptized in the name of the father son and holy ghost” …If you had worded it correctly, I would have answered it without comment. Had you asked (as it is in the Greek) “If you are baptized in the name of the father, AND OF THE Son, AND OF THE Holy Ghost, whose follower are you?” (Emphasis mine.) That’s easy. I AM HIS follower. Praise HIS name. Blessings, Taleb |

Firstly, I never said that the woman taking on the mans name was biblical. I was using a cultural example. Secondly, it says leave his family not change his name either so stop trying to prove something that is not there. THIRDLY, You still don't know who's follower you are because anyone can be a father any one can be a son and I know a lot of people FULL of the Holy Ghost, so you belong to titles not someone. (so let's not use that scripture again that one is WAY to easy to explain) For instance EXPLAIN why it says THE NAME THE NAME THE NAME THE NAME SINGULAR SINGULAR SINGULAR NOT PLURAL. (Got it now?) WHAT IS THE NAME??????? I have the name applied to me...FOURTHLY, now I want to apologize ahead if I seem a little rude or upset, as you slightly rubbed me the wrong way. I was taught to love this freedom and this country, and that just like salvation my freedom has come at a great price. Now you can insult me or my family but there are 2 things that you do not say anything against as I will defend it with every last breath. the first is My God who's name is Jesus. The second is my country. I feel like if you do not appreciate this country I am sure there will be one less generous willing to welcome you in. So please when trying to prove a point please do not criticize my country as I love this land. I believe everyone in my family if you cut us we would bleed red white and blue. Sooo on that note He said be baptised as I must if you just read back you will see my views on that. He had to be baptized as an example of what we should do. Further more, You know really you need to read the scripture above and the one below before you try to use it. AND I looked it up in the greek text btw and it is NOT plural it is SINGULAR. ONCE AGAIN BAPTISMO. SUBMERSE!!!!!! And my concordance takes it farther it says baptism according to the order of baptising to make FULLY WET. This is the NIV Heb 6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, Heb 6:2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. Heb 6:3 And God permitting, we will do so. KJV Heb 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Heb 6:2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Heb 6:3 And this will we do, if God permit. |
