Subject: Why not Baptize as Jesus said to? |
Bible Note: Punkiedo, according to the definitions of the word ‘name’, when Jesus’ cousin John baptized people, whose “name” did he use? In Acts 19, a dozen believers, asked about their baptism, told Paul that they had been baptized “unto John’s baptism”. They were quickly re-baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. We need to understand this tells us that they were baptized under the “authority” of Jesus' name. “Name” (what people call you) is only part of what the word signifies. A police officer shouting, “Stop in the NAME of the law”, gives us a wonderful example of what Scripture is trying to convey in Act 19:7. Jesus said, “I give you authority to … in my name”. That authority comes the same way jurisdictions have the authority to give authority to a policeman, equipping him with the "power" to be able to “stop” people's cars merely by holding up a hand. If you notice what Acts 19:13,15 shares about the “name of Jesus”, it will help you understand what I am saying. “But certain traveling Jews who practiced exorcism undertook to name over those that had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, ‘We exercise you by Jesus whom Paul preaches..’ But answering the evil spirit said, ‘I know Jesus, and I comprehend Paul, but who are you?’” Nothing at all would happen if I shouted to anybody, “Stop in the name of the law.” I have NO authority to do so, is the reason. The “name of the law” (notice "law" is singular) distributes “authority” concerning ALL laws, much the same as Jesus does to His people. And it is that authority that empowers people to be baptized. People don't respond to a policeman's command with, "Which law? There are thousands of laws." Acts doesn't say, "And Paul (or Peter, or Matthew) said, 'I baptize you in the name of Jesus.'"
