1 | Baptism...What does God's Word say? | John 4:14 | Hank | 103259
You spoke of the authority (including to save the thief) that Jesus had as He was being hanged on the cross. Does Jesus still have that authority (power to save) today, or has He since the cross relegated it to water? --Hank
2 | Baptism...What does God's Word say? | John 4:14 | deejhermit | 103291
Hi Hank, Jesus has all authority, and we need to do all things in the name of Jesus, (Col 3: 17) Jesus reveals to us what we should do in the Bible. He told the apostles in the Gospel of John that the comforter would come and teach them and remind them of they had learned. So when Peter filled with the Holy Spirit told the Jews on the day of Pentecost to repent and be baptized into the name of Jesus to recieve the gift of the Holy Ghost, what Jesus said was being fulfilled - the comforter had come. Jesus has all authority to judge us. What will he judge us by? His Word. We need to stop looking at particular passages, (like the theif on the cross), as if they are the whole of God's revelation. But if we look at the entirety of the scriptures with an honest heart it won't be so hard to understand that we need to obey Jesus in everything. |

3 | Baptism...What does God's Word say? | John 4:14 | Hank | 103293
deejhermit - No problem with me, friend, that we need to obey Jesus in everything, and that certainly includes baptism. Obedience to His commands is inarguably the duty of every follower of Christ, of every regenerated (born again) believer. It is for good works for which we are created in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:10). But no works that we can possibly do have anything at all to do with our salvation, which is wholly of God. It is by His grace through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ, that we have been saved. It is not of ourselves, not of our works, not of our doing certain things -- not, in fact, of our doing anything. Salvation does not rely on anything man does or can do. It relies solely on the grace of God, on what the Son of God has already done on the cross. Salvation from start to finish is the gift of God, given by His grace and not because of our merit. (See Ephesians 2:8,9). --Hank

Hi Hank, I agree with you brother. Jesus blood is the factor that washes our sins away. I say we must be baptized only because Jesus commanded it of us, and I think we agree on that. Thank you for that. |
