2 | What does Scripture mean by no works? | John 3:5 | EdB | 111335
Tim Since you posted your question to Colin twice, I'll stick my big nose in by responding to this duplicate one. We are not saved by works that is correct. But without works faith is dead. The question becomes what is our motivating factor. If we do something in an effort to secure salvation then we are making works our stairway to salvation. However if we do something because Jesus asked us to and we love Him and want to please Him then we are not. When my human parent told me to go to school I didn't do it to keep them my parents they would always be my parents. I went to school out of obedience there was no question, no negotiation, no other real choice. Had I not gone to school they would have had every right to discipline me, in fact had they not disciplined me they really wouldn't have loved me. However if that was the only reason I obeyed our relationship would have been very shallow. I never would have learned to think or do for myself I would only have learned to react. What made me obey my parents was loving and trusting them enough to heed their instruction. They had taught me that their love for me was what motivated them to place on me rules and conditions that were for my good. Therefore obeying them became a matter of love, their love setting the conditions and my love obeying them. If I had refused to obey my parents could I ever say I really loved them? I don't think so, I could say I loved when it suited me but when it didn't suit me what they wanted was their problem. That is not love. I think Christians are faced with the same thing today. There are certain things Jesus asked of each and everyone of us. He also said if you love Me you will obey Me. Do we do them for salvation? No. But we must really ask the question if we refuse to do them do we really love Jesus and are we really saved? Be blessed and be a blessing your brother in Christ EdB |

3 | What does Scripture mean by no works? | John 3:5 | Morant61 | 111368
Greetings EdB! Thanks for the response my friend! I was not aware that I had posted this question twice! :-) I agree with your point my friend. There is not doubt that we are commanded to be baptized. Therefore, every Christian ought to be baptized. Just like every Christian ought to love one another as we are commanded to do. Every Christian ought to never lie. Every Christian ought to never gossip, ect.... However, our salvation is not dependent upon us doing what we ought to do. It is dependent solely upon the grace of God. This is why I usually get involved in these discussions. Scripture clearly says that we are not saved by works. There is nothing that we have to 'do' to be saved. Jesus did it all. We only have to accept His free gift of salvation. Once we have been saved, we ought to be obedient to all of the commands of Christ. But, if we fail and sin, we don't stop being saved. We aren't saved by our works, nor are we un-saved by our works. The end result of these discussions is that we end of with a long list of things that we 'must' do, but in the process, we lose grace. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim To me it isn't a must do list but rather if you love Jesus you will do list. If some one prays the prayer of salvation and dies before being able to be baptized I believe their salvation is safe. However if someone gets saved and refuses to be baptized or puts it off, I guess the question I ask is where is the obedience? Where is the love? I don't see it and I would think they may possibly be one that hears "depart from me I never knew you." EdB |

5 | What does Scripture mean by no works? | John 3:5 | CDBJ | 111398
Hi EdB, God doesn’t command us to love Him for salvation but he does tell us to believe in His Son Jesus. The Love for God doesn’t come until we learn more about Him through studying His Word. The more we learn of Him the more our love grows for Him and we can’t even understand that without being saved first. 1 John 4:9-10 God showed how much he loved us by sending his only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 10This is real love. It is not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. CDBJ |

CDBJ Salvation demands a change, albeit small at first a change none the less. Part of the that change is obedience to the Master, to the Lord, to our Savior. Too many are taught today that all you have to is believe. James 2:19 clearly tells us more is required. The word beleive used in John 3:16 clearly says there is more. Pisteuo belief is a belief where one is depentant, trusting, putting one's life in another's hand. To say you believe with no change in your heart, life or spirit is nothing more than lip service. If we believe Jesus died for us we also believe we need to be obedient to his word. Too many believe to day they can live like children of hell, do what they think is right, do what they can justify, do what they "feel" and because they confess Jesus as Lord they have everylasting life. It takes more than just confessing Jesus is Lord of your life, Jesus in fact has to be Lord of your life. There can be no fence sitting here, many think "I'll say He is Lord but I'll still run the show." Jesus commanded his disciple to go make disciples baptizing them. I most every case of conversion we see baptism as past of the process. Peter say repent and be baptized. Can you be saved and not baptized? Yes. But I beleive all saved people will have a desire to be baptized as soon as possible. The ones that resist I have to ask who is in control of your life Jesus or are you still holding on. EdB |
