Hi, Betty Jones! I believe that things don't happen in a vacuum in the Bible. We can see many events typified from Genesis on. Jesus had a human mother who is bequeathed to a disciple (the one He loved?) which is typified in Revelation 12:17: "Then the dragon was enraged with the woman and went away to make war on the rest of her children, who obey God's commandments and have in themselves the witness of Jesus." These children were not her natural children; they were adopted children (as John). Many would like you to believe that that passage is talking about the Church; but clearly they are mistaken: Jesus birthed the Church, not the other way around! I must confess that I do have a question on John 19:27--I cannot understand why, since there were Biblical statements about Jesus' siblings--especially about James who is a prominent disciple, Jesus would bequeath His mother to someone other than a blood relative. Unless a) Revelation 19:27 applies or these siblings were not Mary's blood relatives! God Bless! |

I think I might have an answer to your question about Jesus' preference of John over James and His other blood siblings. I think Christ was trying to once again give us another example of a whole new standard for us as humans to follow. You remember Jesus' mother and His brothers thought He was going crazy thus in Matt 12, He lets the world know who His real family was. Remember James and probably his brothers didn't become christians until AFTER Jesus' death and resurrection. I understand this very well because one of my sisters has been a member of another faith for many years in spite of her growing up in the same household with me and the rest of the family. Our father was an elder; my brother is currently a deacon; I was a deacon in a previous congregation. (I've traveled quite a bit.) Don't get me wrong...my sis and I meet several times per year, her house, my house, Dad's house but we don't go to worship together and the subject of religion is taboo between us. So I feel MUCH closer to my own brethren in our congregation than I do to my blood sister. Again, I think this is God's preference in His world which should take precedence to our world. Remember, Christ predicted that His ways would come between family members and we see that every day. We need to get used to seeing things God's way and discard our preferences. |

Greetings Rowdy! You raise some interesting points. I think it would be good for us to remember that we don't know anything about the relationship between Mary and her children, or between Jesus and His siblings. We do know that His brother James became a leader in the church after the death of Jesus, but we nothing about before that time. It may have been that His brothers were either not willing or able to care for His mother. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hi, Morant61! It is also worth noting that James was not referred to as a relative of the Lord until after Jesus' bequeathal of Mary to John who happened to have a brother named James! God Bless! |

His brothers are mentioned several times, one being Matt 13:55. | ||||||

Correct!, I should have said that James notoriety was not evident till after the bequeathal of Mary. But my point is still valid: Matthew 13:55 name James, Joseph, Simon and Judas and sisters (which implies at least two) so between at least 6 brothers and sisters they could not fulfill a Jewish Law that required them to care for their widowed mother (Joseph is not mentioned except as reference point of Jesus upbringing--never as a personality during Jesus' public years; so it can be surmised that Joseph had died and that Mary was a widower)--even if they lived in extreme poverty! God Bless! |
