1 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | EdB | 114007
Sir Pent We seem to be getting tangled up in definitions and implications. Let’s talk relationship. In the Old Testament, man and God were in a very different relationship than what we enjoy as New Testament believers. In the Old Testament God loved his people and used men and women chosen by Him to serve Him. In this service God empowered them through His Holy Spirit with the capabilities they needed to accomplish their task. In the New Testament our relationship with God is as Father child. God sends us His Holy Spirit to dwell within us to help us achieve all that we can along with doing His service. EdB |

2 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Ray | 114081
Hi EdB, I for one, loved your dialogue with Sir Pent and the spirit in which it was spoken. In one of your posts you spoke of the Holy Spirit "in or "on" or just "empowered". I wonder if you would like to continue your discussion with the "just "empowered"" as being filled with *holy *spirit, lower case? 2) Galatians 3:6, "And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, saying, "Abba!, Father!" Here it says that God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts. In the last sentence of this post you said that "God sends us His Holy Spirit to dwell within us..." Would you give the reference for that thought so that I can compare it for my personal study? 3) Would you talk about Ezekiel 36:26,27 where it talks about both a new spirit and a new Spirit within you? 3 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | EdB | 114113
Ray I don't think we are empowered by a 'holy' (lower case) spirit. If we were then in fact we would be moving in our own righteousness rather than the righteousness of Jesus imputed to us. Point 2 I see this many places in scripture put most clearly in 1 Cor. 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? Here is a list of other NT reference from Thompson Chain Reference John 14:17; John 14:23; Romans 5:5; Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 2:12; 1 Corinthians 3:16; 1 Corinthians 6:19; 1 Corinthians 12:7; 1 Corinthians 14:25; 2 Corinthians 6:16; Galatians 4:6; Ephesians 2:22; Ephesians 4:6; Philippians 2:13; 2 Timothy 1:14; 1 Peter 1:11; 1 John 2:27; 1 John 4:12 Point 3 This passage is talking of our regeneration that occurs we were are reborn. This is promised many places, again a list from Thompson’s Jeremiah 32:39; Ezekiel 11:19; Ezekiel 36:26; John 1:13; John 3:3; John 3:5; John 3:8; 1 Corinthians 4:15; 1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Corinthians 3:3; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 4:29; Galatians 6:15; Ephesians 2:10; Titus 3:5; James 1:18; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 Peter 1:23; 2 Peter 1:4; 1 John 2:29; 1 John 3:9; 1 John 4:7; 1 John 5:1; 1 John 5:18 Perhaps John MacArthur’s words will explain it better. I will cleanse you. Along with the physical reality of a return to the Land, God pledged spiritual renewal: 1) cleansing from sin; 2) a new heart of the New Covenant (cf. Jer. 31:31–34); 3) a new spirit or disposition inclined to worship Him; and 4) His Spirit dwelling in them, enabling them to walk in obedience to His word. This has not happened, because Israel has not trusted Jesus Christ as Messiah and Savior, but it will before the kingdom of Messiah (cf. Zech. 12–14; Rom. 11:25–27; Rev. 11:13). MacArthur, J. J. 4 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Ray | 114134
Hi EdB, Thank you for your time and work on this post. 1 Cor. 6:19 willl probably be one of the references that Sir Pent will give me for I asked him for a reference of the Holy Spirit indwelling us. Before I give my understanding of the passage, may I say that I go with the King James for 1 Corinthians 6:17 and 6:20. 1 Corinthians 6:19, "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from (God), and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, *and in your spirit which are God's." 1 Corinthians 6:17, NASB, "But the one who joins himself to the Lord/ is one spirit [with Him]." The one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit. And as MacArthur says "a new spirit or disposition inclined to worship Him." We have the Holy Spirit who is from (God) and we are not our own. Romans 8:9, "However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit [I would say spirit], if indeed the Spirit of God/ dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to (Him)." We are not our own, we belong to (Him) and we are complete in (Him). Colossians 1:28. That is the way I see it because we are not in the flesh but in the spirit. Romans 8:9. Colossians 1:27ff tells me "that Christ is in you, the hope of glory, 28 And we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in (Christ). 29 And for this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me."
