Sir Pent - I have thought about this and although I have no absolute answers I would offer this observation. Mark 1:8 tells us that Jesus would baptize believers with the Holy Spirit - we would be indwelt - this is our SPIRITUAL BAPTISM. How can the Holy Spirit indwell an unclean vessel? (And this is what OT "believers" were!) When Christ attoned for our sins, everyone had the possibility of becoming NEW (and clean) on the basis of faith in Him. In the Old Testament, the Spirit came upon individuals of God's choosing. John the Baptist was the ONLY person prior to Christ's death and ressurection who was described as full of the Holy Spirit - from before birth.(Lk 1:15) Yet, could the Spirit be withdrawn? I suspect so. At Pentacost, when the Spirit was given, it was given and received into "New Creatures" IN Christ as a permanent DEPOSIT, guaranteeing our redemption and future life with Him. Does this make sense to you? Blessings, mommapbs |

Sir Pent, This is an interesting, but challenging question, one of which I certainly don’t have a complete answer. Here are some thoughts. Possibly others will be able to fill the gaps. The most immediate reference that comes to mind is John. 14:16-17, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” We can start by what we do know about God’s “timing” in regards to Christ. In Gal 4:4-6 it says,”But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!" We simply know that it was the fullness of time- God’s own time- in which Christ was sent. We might rightly infer that it was certainly in God's timing when He chose to send the Spirit, though scripture seems silent on the "why".In verse 6 we have that God literally "delegated out the Spirit of the Son." The verses which prophesy of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Is 32:15; 44:3; Eze 39:29; Joe 2:28; Mt 3:11; Mk 1:8; Lu 3:16; Jn 1:33; 7:38–39; Ac 1:5) unfortunately don’t tell us “why”as to timing.
