NASB | Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 6:1 What shall we say [to all this]? Should we continue in sin and practice sin as a habit so that [God's gift of] grace may increase and overflow? |
Bible Question: I was baptized this past summer by sprinkling...and i know that baptism is basically a outward manifestation of faith...yet one of my close friends believes that it only "counts" if it is by immersion and not sprinkling....any comments or scripture would be greatly appreciated... |
Bible Answer: First off, baptism is not "a outward manifestation of faith". There is no verse to suport this false teaching. Lookup baptism in a concordance and check out all the verses that have to do with baptism. Rom 3:23 says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. Sin separates us from God and baptism is the method God has chosen for us to be cleansed from our sins that we might be united with Him again. Let’s look at Rom 6:1-8 again: What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him Paraphrase of Rom 6:1-8: Those who have been baptized have died to sin. Those who have been baptized into Christ have been baptized into His death. Those who have been baptized will be raised from the dead by the glory of the Father. Those who have been baptized have been united with Christ that the body of sin might be done away with. Those who have been baptized will live with Christ. The only way to access Christ’s blood is in His death and the only way to access his death is through baptism. Baptism is how and when our sins are washed away (Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16). Baptism puts us into Christ’s body, the church (Acts 2:41, 1 Cor. 12:13). Baptism is when we are born again (John 3:5, Rom. 6:4). Baptism is how and when we are buried and raised with Christ (Rom. 6:4, Col 2:12). Baptism is fitting in order to fulfill all righteousness (Matt. 3:15). Baptism saves (Mark 16:16, 1 Pet 3:21). Jesus’ final statement while on Earth was, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16:15-17). If you haven’t been baptism you are still separated from God because your sins haven’t been washed away. You have not been saved from wickedness by water like Noah and his family (1 Pet 3:20-21). You are still living in a body of sin because you haven’t died and been reborn. If you haven’t died with Christ through baptism then you have not been raised with Him to walk in newness of life Rom 6:4). You are not in the body of Christ (which is the same as the church) because you have not been baptized into the body (1 Cor. 12:13). If you are not in Christ’s body you do not have access to His blood, which is able to cleanse you from all sin. If you choose not to baptized you will not be saved (Mark 16:16). I see no scripture to suport your belief. “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God” (Matt 22:29). |
