Bible Question:
I've been trying to explain some things to my mormon husband about the "fall" of Adam and Eve. I'm stuck on what to say to him due to his belief on this issue (which I don't even understand his explaination). He (the mormons) believe that Adam and Eve were doomed to fail because of God's commands to: 1. not eat of the tree of knowledge 2. to be fruitful and multiply He says that one can not be done without the other (which I don't understand). He believes that the fall was "good". I don't understand any of this and therefore can't make an argument/discussion for my explaination. Does anyone understand this, if so, please explain it to me. |
Bible Answer: Hi Dat, I am not sure if the following will be helpful to you or not. From the answers I have seen (which I agree with - especailly about just praying) I have not seen any that really address your Q directly. Your subject asks, "Was Adam and Eve's fall a good thing?". It is never good to sin. But as has been pointed out by the other reply's, God gave man the freedom of choice. He knows what choices man will make. In the case of Adam and Eve, what would have been the result(s) of their not sinning? Stretching it out, what if every man (generically speaking) who ever lived chose perfectly? Sin would always be a potential problem. Think of it like a "service engine light" in your car. If you have had good luck it has never come on, but you have not precluded that it is still possible. In fact the possibility is always there. If we had not sinned in the garden then God would not have been able to set the plan in motion to deal with sin once and for all. The potential of it would always be there. God, in His infinite wisdom, knew man would sin, and allowed him (us) to. Why? So that He could judge sin, once and for all eternity. It is no longer a "potential threat" and can never be for all eternity because Jesus paid the price for it. It has been dealt with, and when Jesus comes back and takes those who believe in Him home to heaven sin will be no more. This could not have happen or been applied to all mankind (including Adam and Eve) if man had not failed, just as God knew they would. So, is it a good thing that original sin began with Adam and Eve? I think I would have to say "yes". It allows for Jesus to concur sin. Once Jesus takes those believeing in Him "home" and we won't have to worry about sin ever again. Remember scripture make's it plain that God has a plan and it included you, and every other person (beleiver or not), since before the world began. Check out Psalm 139. and Prov. 16:4 |
