Bible Question:
I've been trying to explain some things to my mormon husband about the "fall" of Adam and Eve. I'm stuck on what to say to him due to his belief on this issue (which I don't even understand his explaination). He (the mormons) believe that Adam and Eve were doomed to fail because of God's commands to: 1. not eat of the tree of knowledge 2. to be fruitful and multiply He says that one can not be done without the other (which I don't understand). He believes that the fall was "good". I don't understand any of this and therefore can't make an argument/discussion for my explaination. Does anyone understand this, if so, please explain it to me. |
Bible Answer: If I get it right, your husband is saying that to "be fruitful and multiply" was inherently sinful. But nakedness was natural to them before they ate from the tree, and they knew nothing of good and evil; they were innocents. Doing what God asked of them could not be inherently sinful-that would be to deny His nature....From my perspective, your husband's view also denies a crucial part of our relationship with God. Especially in His relationship with Adam and Eve, God made clear the concept of free will. He made us free, but we chose sin with that freedom. In Christ He once again set us free from sin, giving us the second chance we needed to choose Him... As much as it hurts Him, because He made us to be with Him, He gave us the precious gift of free will. Hope this is helpful in any small way- great fodder for thought and reflection! |
