Subject: What are your views of once saved always |
Bible Note: Greetings Hank! I would (very) respectfully disagree for the following reason. Spurgeon's sermon on 'Final Perseverance' included three main points. The first point dealt with 'who is being addressed' in Heb. 6:4. The second point dealt with 'what does falling away' mean. The third point dealt with 'could one be restored if they fell away'. Now, obviously, Spurgeon goes on in points two and three in ways that an Arminian would not agree with. However, point one is what NC quoted and agree with - that Christians were being addressed. Much of what Spurgeon says in his first point I agree with, but much of what he says in the next two points I do not agree with. So, I don't see NC as taking Spurgeon out of context when he was making the exact same point that Spurgeon made in his first point - that Christians are being addressed and discussed. So, in that sense, his quotes were very much in context. The two would definitely part company after that point! :-) I would agree with you if NC had went on to argue that Spurgeon believed that one could lose his salvation, but he never made that claim. My only 'criticism' would have been that he should have cited his source so that others could read the sermon if they choose to do so. ;-) My old english professors drilled that one into me! ;-) Well, I have to run.
