Bible Question: what does second death mean? |
Bible Answer: Toto, I think the answer to your question lies within the understanding of the word death in the language of the original Koine Greek. The word that the English word death was translated from was the word THANATOS; it actually means separation. In physical death, the soul is separated from the body. In spiritual death, the soul is separated from God as in the case of all unbelievers even while they are alive physically. When we are born into this world we are born physically alive but spiritually dead, or separated from God; hence the need to be born again. At the point of physical death all unbeliever's souls go to a place of temporary abode, hell; this is spiritual death realized by the unbeliever, death number one. There is a time in the future when all those in hell will stand before God for judgment. The bases of this judgment will be their work, which will be found lacking in the balance compared to the work of Christ. They will be separated from God for a second time into the lake of fire forever. Thus, this is the second separation from the presence of God or spiritual death number two. It is my firm opinion that after seeing God face to face that this encounter will make the lake of fire much worse just knowing what they missed out on. It will be Jesus doing this judging because the father judges no man John 5:22. I hope this helps, CDBJ |
