Bible Question: Do you have to be baptized to be saved? |
Bible Answer: Baptism is the act in which God meets you to fulfill all that He has promised you. There is nothing special or sacred about the water. The best way to understand this is to remember this phrase: We are saved by grace, through faith, at baptism. Many claim that those who believe in the necessity of baptism in salvation are stating that the water some how regenerates the individual. This is not true. It is the Spirit of God who acts upon the soul of man at baptism that regenerates the individual. To see a clearer picture of what the Bible says about baptism, please consult the following passages of Scripture: Matt 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16, John 3:3-5; Acts 2:38-39; Acts 22:16; Romans 6:3-4; I Cor. 12:13; Gal 3:26-27; Eph 5:25-27: Col 2:11-13; Titus 3:5; and I Peter 3:21. An excellant study book on the subject is "Baptism in the New Testament" by G.R. Beasley-Murray, who by the way is a Baptist scholar who looked beyond the traditions of his church and examined the truth of Scripture and recognized the necessity of baptism. |
