Bible Question: I usually use the NIV version of the bible since it is easier to use. On some occassions I will look at the King James version to compare a passage. I have found some MAJOR word changes in some of the passages. My husband (Mormon) says that if I my church uses a particular version (mine uses the NIV) that I am to only use that version and if I disagree with it, that it proves that the Mormons are right when they say that they believe in the bible "as long as it is tranlated correctly". How can I answer him. I get tongue tied or just keep silent in order to avoid an argument. |
Bible Answer: Comparing the Book of Mormon with the Bible is comparing apples to oranges. The Book of Mormon was written in 1830 in English. The Bible was written by many different authors spanning thousands of years mostly in three different languages, the most recent of which was nearly 2000 years ago. If you look at any major book written in a language other than English, you may find several different versions available because they're different translations provided at different times (i.e., La Miserables). You also must remember that some translations were done with the manuscripts available, sometimes from the original languages and some depended on the Latin Vulgate, a translation from the original. Sometimes it helps to use different translations because words exist for which there is no perfect word in another language or there may be a couple of choices. Regardless of how you look at it, God has done a marvelous job of preserving the meaning of His Word. It was written by different authors of varying backgrounds, in different languages, in different times and yet it is one cohesive message. Praise God! |
