NASB | 2 Timothy 2:26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Timothy 2:26 and that they may come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. |
Bible Question: I have always understood this verse to mean that the persons being spoken about were "held captive by Satan to do his (Satan's) will. How can I be sure that the amplified version is accurate in telling me that the persons are escaping "...henceforth to do God's will"? |
Bible Answer: Dear aquila..... The NIV has it this way... "and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will." The "who" word is clearly a reference to the "devil" word in the previous phrase. The amplified is wrong. But then again there may be some obscure Greek idiom that I do not know of. But you can not use the ampified for study. But the NASB is good for study :-) God Bless....Jensen |
