NASB | 2 Timothy 2:26 and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Timothy 2:26 and that they may come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. |
Bible Question: I have always understood this verse to mean that the persons being spoken about were "held captive by Satan to do his (Satan's) will. How can I be sure that the amplified version is accurate in telling me that the persons are escaping "...henceforth to do God's will"? |
Bible Answer: Hi aquila, The NASB Study Bible that I use has in the margin, "Or possibly, 'by him, to do His will.'" The NKJ which also capitalizes Deity reads, "having been taken captive by him to do his will." I think that the important thing to note, however, is that the Greek reads "HAVING BEEN CAPTURED BY HIM FOR (IN) THAT ONE'S WILL." l)"That one" would refer back to the devil I would think. 2)If they have come to their senses and escaped from the devil; if they have been granted repentance, as verse 25 reads; then the possibility of doing "that One's" will would be by knowing THE TRUTH. ***I am not against capitalizing Truth and often do, but I think the natural reading would be the way that you have understood it in the past.
