Bible Note: Dear Bows, I am rather surprised to see you use 1 Kings 8:11 to support "slain in the spirit." I do not find a single commentator who makes this connection. Certainly what is described is not anything like what is alleged to occur in practices like those seen on TBN. For one think, the Shekinah glory is not in a specific location any longer. Instead, He resides in the hearts of believers. One might use John 18:6 to describe something like the description of "slain in the spirit," which is the passage I thought you'd use. However, that certainly didn't include slapping someone on the forehead. Furthermore, all those who were effected hated our Lord Jesus and were seeking to do Him harm. Bows, we appreciate that many of your beliefs are experiential. You are certainly welcome to base your beliefs on whatever you choose. However, as we have repeatedly affirmed, this forum is about Bible Study, not Experience Study. We deem the Bible to be the sole source of authority, the "supreme judge, by which all controversies of religion are to be determined, and all decrees of councils, opinions of ancient writers, doctrines of men, and private spirits [experiences], are to be examined, and in whose sentence we are to rest, can be no other but the Holy Scripture delivered by the Spirit, into which Scripture so delivered, our faith is finally resolved." Furthermore, we do not walk by sight [experiences] but by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7), and we live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine [what is right for us], for reproof [what is wrong with us], for correction [how to make it right], for instruction in righteousness [how to keep it right]." (2 Timothy 3:16) The Scriptures is what this forum is about. Truly, no one wishes to denigrate your experiences per se. No one believes that the Christian faith is entirely un-experiential. We just question the pertinence, value, and origin of experiences in the context rightly dividing the Word. The Word is true, no matter what anyone experiences! In Him, Doc |
