Bible Note: Bows: If web surfing is not in the Bible, then why do you do it? ...... To use 1 Kings 8:10,11 to support the "slain in the Spirit" phenomenon defies all reason. It is the worst possible kind of eisegesis imaginable. ..... You say to Brad, "If you tell me that God doesn't do the things described in the Bible any more, then I would not believe you, based on Heb. 13:8." Since Heb. 13:8 says, that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever," it must mean that God still commands His people to make themselves arks of gopherwood. ..... Do you know what eisegesis is? It's reading into Scripture what isn't there. It's failure to see in Scripture what is there. It's twisting, bending, adulterating and butchering Scripture to fit preconceived notions, false beliefs, personal experiences, and unreliable feelings, emotions, hunches, visions, personal and private revelation, et cetera. It's what false teachers and cult leaders do. It's what people who rely on personal experience do. It's doing the very opposite of what is commanded in 2 Timothy 2:15. Christianity is based on objectiviity: a real Savior, a real Gospel, a real body of truth that is the very word of God. It is NOT based on subjectivity: feelings, whims, exoteric dreams, visions, experiences and the like. ....... To teach that 1 Kings 8:10,11 supports Benny Hinn's practice of causing his misguided followers to be "slain in the Spirit" is an example of eisegesis par excellent. We should all of us take heed to post orthodox, biblical responses that have the earmarks of true exegesis, and keep drivel in the trash heap where it belongs. --Hank |
