Bible Note: Free Thinker: Your words: "I intend to ask as many questions as I can type and read as many books as I can get my hands on." May I ask you to consider of what value your intentions should God choose to say to you as He did to the rich fool in the parable, "Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee." (See Luke 12:16-21). Speaking from the perspective of one who has been a Christian well over half a century, and one who has asked many questions and read many books, I submit for your further consideration that there is a question that trumps all other questions anyone has ever asked. It is the question that the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" And the answer comes from the only Book in the world that has the answer: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved." (See Acts 16:25-34). The road to salvation is not built on a foundation of questions or paved with books. The only way to salvation leads to the cross of Christ and to His blood that He shed for the redemption of sinners like you and me. When King Solomon began his book of Ecclesiastes he was what one might choose to call a free thinker, seeking peace of mind and meaning in life by pursuing pleasure, riches and human wisdom. Finding these things to be like chasing after the wind and all of them vanity of vanities, he concluded his book with these words: "And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil" (Ecclesiastes 12:12-14). --Hank |
