Bible Note: Hi, Vintage... Doesn't Paul, in the epistles themselves, say what his purpose in writing was? With regard to "instilling fear" ... given the stated purpose of the epistles -- generally and in particular regarding the doctrines themselves -- wouldn't that belay that question? Perhaps we should read the whole of the epistles specifically with the attitude that the intended purpose was comfort. Paul knew the Thessalonian believers specifically and culturally -- and in chronological context. Nothing in Scripture ever means something other than what it meant when it was penned.
