Subject: How did Paul understand salvation? |
Bible Note: Even John Calvin in his later, more mature, years recanted from some of the more extreme positions he embraced in his youth. His "Institutes of the Christian Religion" was published when Calvin was but 28 years old. What we call today "hyper-Calvinism," examples of which we have seen displayed on this Forum, is really an unfortunate adulteration -- I would even say a burlesque -- of the theology that this brilliant reformer taught in his mature years. Even though I do not subscribe to all the tenets of Calvinism, I sincerely feel that this system of soteriology has suffered at the hands of many of those who, professing to be Calvinist in their beliefs, have become extremists and thus done much harm to the very system they claim to promote. We all of us should be very zealous of the faith and eager to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. But there is a great deal of difference between zeal and extremism, between spreading the Good News with loving and joyful hearts and trying to poke it down the throats of everyone we encounter. --Hank |
