Bible Note: The next benefit of salvation in the ordo salutis to discuss is adoption. Adoption is the legal act of God whereby He makes us members of His family, children of the Father, and brethren with Christ, conferring all of the rights and privileges associated with that position. "All those that are justified, God vouchsafed, in and for the sake of His only Son Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the grace of adoption, by which they are taken into the number, and enjoy the liberties and privileges of the children of God, have His name put upon them, receive the spirit of adoption, have access to the throne of grace with boldness, are enabled to cry Abba, Father, are pitied, protected, provided for, and chastened by Him as by a Father, yet never cast off, but sealed to the day of redemption, and inherit the promises as heirs of everlasting salvation. (Ephesians 1:5; Galatians 4:4, 5; John 1:12; Romans 8:17; 2 Corinthians 6:18; Revelation 3:12; Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6; Ephesians 2:18; Psalms 103:13; Proverbs 14:26; 1 Peter 5:7; Hebrews 12:6; Isaiah 54:8, 9; Lamentations 3:31; Ephesians 4:30; Hebrews 1:14; Hebrews 6:12)" (BCF, chapter 12) Note that not all men are "the children of God." Those that are outside of the family are called "children of wrath" (Ephesians 2:3), "sons of disobedience" (Ephesians 2:2; 5:6), "children of the flesh" (Romans 9:8), "children of the bondwoman" (Galatians 4:31), "cursed children" (2 Peter 2:14), and children of Satan (John 8:42-44). For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (Romans 8:14-17) But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. (Galatians 4:4-7) - - - - - - - - - - - - "I am His by purchase and I am His by conquest; I am His by donation and I am His by election; I am His by covenant and I am His by marriage; I am wholly His; I am peculiarly His; I am universally His; I am eternally His. Once I was a slave but now I am a son; once I was dead but now I am alive; once I was darkness but now I am light in the Lord; once I was a child of wrath, an heir of hell, but now I am an heir of heaven; once I was Satan's bond-servant but now I am God's freeman; once I was under the spirit of bondage but now I am under the Spirit of adoption that seals up to me the remission of my sins, the justification of my person and the salvation of my soul." --Thomas Brooks "God's grace converts sinners from being servants of Satan to being servants of Christ, yet God promises more than just that. He manifests His fatherly love towards lost sinners by adopting them as His own children. Through adoption, He gives them all the rights, privileges and protection as belonging to His household and having His name. They become adopted sons and daughters of the Father, and brothers, sisters, and joint-heirs with Christ." --David Brown "In regeneration God gives us new spiritual life within. In justification God gives us right legal standing before Him. But in adoption God makes us members of his family. Therefore, the Biblical teaching on adoption focuses much more on the personal relationships that salvation gives us with God and with His people." --Wayne Grudem |
