Bible Question:
Matthew 12:31 (ESV) Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. What is blasphemy against the Spirit? |
Bible Answer: Jeff - Context is usually helpful in exegeting Scripture, and that is the clear case here. Begin reading in Matthew 12:22. continue through verse 31, noting particularly verse 24. Turn now to Mark and read 3:28-30, noting especially verse 30. Do you see now, is it not now clear -- letting Scripture interpret Scripture -- what the Bible means by the term "blasphemy against the Spirit"? Studying Scripture in context has the potential to lead one to proper interpretation of Scripture. Extracting verses out of context, however, can and does lead to very bad theoogy. --Hank |
