Bible Question: The bible says"do not be drunken with wine. Does that mean that we can't drink at all? will a class of wine everyday at diner prohibit a person from entering heaven? |
Bible Answer: It is my understanding that in the following passages the same Greek word is used for 'wine': Eph 5:18; 1 Tim 3:3, 3:8, 5:23; Titus 1:7, 2:3. From these verses it is clear to me that Paul is referring to alcoholic drink and not, as some teach, grape juice. Eph 5:18 - one cannot become 'drunk' on grape juice. Note that the command is 'do not be drunk with wine,' and not 'do not drink wine.' 1 Tim 3:3 and Titus 1:7 - in my estimation the word 'bishop' is significant here. A bishop is at the head of the local ecclesiastical hierarchy; perhaps Paul is saying that for the bishop, total abstinence is preferred to maintain an absolutely blameless testimony. Why would the use of grape juice be a problem? 1 Tim 3:8 - here a lesser office is in view, that of 'deacons.' The word 'much' is used to qualify the use of wine. I take it that deacons are permitted to use a little wine. Again, grape juice doesn't make sense here. Titus 2:3 - Here the 'aged women' are also admonished to 'be not given to much wine,' ('slaves to drink' - Amplified). Grape juice again makes no sense; how can one be a slave to grape juice? 1 Tim 5:23 - 'use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thy frequent infirmities.' Once again grape juice makes no sense. I suffered two heart attacks and was advised by the cardiologist that the moderate use of wine is advised - 5 ounces daily, and red wine was emphasized. I don't like wine but occasional buy a bottle and drink 5 ounces daily. It is a medical fact that the geographical regions of the world having the least amount of heart problems are areas where wine is used liberaly. In the account of Jesus turning the water into wine (John 2:1-10) grape juice makes absolutely no sense, e.g., 'Everyone else serves his best wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then he serves that which is not so good: but you have kept back the good wine until now' (Amplified). In summation: I feel that the Bible contains warnings re: the use of wine, not prohibitions. |
