NASB | 1 Corinthians 5:11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a one. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 5:11 But actually, I have written to you not to associate with any so-called [Christian] brother if he is sexually immoral or greedy, or is an idolater [devoted to anything that takes the place of God], or is a reviler [who insults or slanders or otherwise verbally abuses others], or is a drunkard or a swindler--you must not so much as eat with such a person. [2 Thess 3:6] |
Bible Question: HELP! I am having trouble reconciling two verses. I have 2 friends who both claim to be Christians. Both say they were saved at age 12. One is a Homosexual male, the other is a married woman engaged in an adulterous affair. In 1 Corinthians 5:11, Paul says: "But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a one." But in the book of James, he tells us to turn our brethren from sin, and to do so covers a multitude of sins. How can I "turn them from sin" if I am not to associate with them? |
Bible Answer: Jesus is our best example. He spent three years with His disciples. Among these men was one whom Jesus says was a betrayer and that it would have been better if he had never been born- Matt. 26. Jesus not only spent time with him, he was one of the men that Jesus had sent out to minister- Jesus knew Judas, and knew what was in his heart. Jesus was eating with Judas as He talked about His betrayal. Yet you see Jesus had three in the inner circle (close friends) Judas was not one of them. We need to be friends to those whom Jesus places around us and always be like Jesus was and still is " A FRIEND TO THE SINNERS" . But ask the Holy Spirit to show us who to have in our inner circle to confide in and pray with and trust. |
