NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:22 Therefore, [unknown] tongues are [meant] for a [supernatural] sign, not to believers but to unbelievers [who might be receptive]; while prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people] is not for unbelievers but for believers. |

Bible Note: Greetings Hank! I would certainly agre with Dr. MacArthur concerning the hearing and speaking in Acts 2. However, I strongly disagree with his singular/plural theory in 1 Cor. 14. In short, he teaches that the singular form of 'tongue' refers to a false or counterfeit gift, while the plural refers to the real gift of 'tongues'. The problem is that there is no evidence to support this view at all. In fact, there is plenty of evidence to support the fact that when Paul is speaking of an individual speaking in tongues, he always uses 'tongue'. When Paul is speaking of tongues in general, he always uses the plural form. For more info on this, check out post number 61619. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
