Bible Note: Dear ZtheBerean, Autosoterism is the belief that men must save themselves by some work or other. All religion teaches this, since religion is about man bridging the gap between himself and God. In this sense Christianity is almost the opposite of religion! In other words, Christianity is about God bridging the gap between Himself and man. The Westminster Dictionary of Theological Terms defines monergism in this way: "The view that the Holy Spirit is the only agent who effects regeneration of Christians. It is in contrast with synergism, the view that there is a cooperation between the divine and the human in the regeneration process." So, synergism, is -- in effect -- the opposite of monergism. These terms are more theologically precise. Also, their use tends to reduce the amount of hubbub we often get from people whose theology isn't the result of actual study.
