Bible Note: Greetings Grace and Truth! Which verse of the Bible defines 'grace' as being the "Word"? The best verse to use to define 'grace' is Rom. 11:6: "And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace." Here 'grace' is contrasted with 'work'. This same contrast is expressed in Rom. 4:4-5: "Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. 5 However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness." Thus, 'work' is what someone does to earn salvation, while 'grace' is an umerited gift received by faith. This is shown as well in 2 Cor. 6:1-2: "As God’s fellow workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. 2 For he says, ‘‘In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation." In short, 'grace' is always contrasted with 'works' or 'law' or 'effort'. It always refers to an umerited favor received by us from God. But, I have never seen a single verse where 'grace' is defined as being the "Word". Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
