Subject: Baptism in the holy spirit? |
Bible Note: Searcher, I need to differ with you about a few conclusions you have drawn. You stated, “Where (known) tongues is one of the gifts - listed last, therefore not a greater gift (vs 31).” Does that mean that at the end of 1 Cor 13: where faith, hope and love are listed and it explains that the greatest of these three is love – faith is the least because it is listed first? And, if “tongues” were “known languages”, how come Paul spoke it more than anyone else, yet he admitted he had no idea what he was saying. He also suggested “pray that there be someone to interpret so people would know what was said.” Duh. Whoops, Acts 15:8 does not say "no tongues". Peter is most likely talking about his time with Cornelius. That ties Acts 15 with Acts 10. They spoke in tongues BEFORE they were baptized in water. If it wasn’t Cornelius, than that meant Peter ministered to more Gentiles than most think. Anyway, Peter stated that THE GENTILES received the Holy Spirit EVEN AS WE DID. Not differently than we did. Not different than anyone else did. The “evidence” – speaking in tongues. And Acts 8:15-17 – How do you suppose Simon realized people received the Holy Spirit by Peter laying his hands upon them? What “evidence” did those people who received the Holy Spirit offer Simon? And don't you suppose the many who were added to the church in Acts 2:38-41? They were promised the "gift of the Holy Spirit" and we can rest assured He come into them with His gifts which bring us back to 1 Corinthians. And IF that whole church wasn't "speaking in tongues", then why did Paul lecture about how not to, and how to use the gift of tongues? Of ALL the churches where Peter, John, Paul etc. preached and visited throughout their ministry, how many do you dare to suppose weren’t filled with people filled with the Holy Spirit following their “teacher’s” example of speaking in tongues?
