Subject: Baptism in the holy spirit? |
Bible Note: Hi Searcher, I have a different outlook than you about Acts 2:38. I don't see the "gift of the Holy Spirit" as having anything to do with speaking in tongues, but I don't see it as an indwelling either. You stated that you believed "it is His indwelling us". I think that the gift of verse 38 is the promise of verse 39 and the promise of verse 33. This promise was poured forth and they both saw and heard it. Peter spoke many words of testimony and exhortation to them and they received his word and were baptized. I think they were washed in the word and that the gift was holy spirit. Acts 2:36, "Therefore let all the house of Israel KNOW FOR CERTAIN that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified." Rather than an indwelling I see it as the saving knowledge of the Messiah through whom our sins are forgiven. This knowledge will give them power to be His witnesses. Acts 1:8, "but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses...even to the remotest part of the earth." From the heart, Ray |
