Subject: what does the water refer to in john 3:5 |
Bible Note: Greetings Darcy! It is good to hear from you! The only problem I would have with your position is that it doesn't fit the context. How would Nicodemus have know what Jesus was refering to if 'water' was a reference to the cross? The immediate context has to do with natural and spiritual birth. As far as unborn children are concerned, I don't think Jesus is making 'birth' a requirement as much as building upon Nicodemus' response. If I could paraphrase, I would say 'More than physical birth, I mean spiritual birth'. Another view that I have heard, which I do think has some merit is that Jesus may have referring back to the prophecies of a clean heart. Nicodemus would have been familiar with these promises. Well, I've got to get to bed now! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
