Subject: A Study of John's Gospel. |
Bible Note: Part one John 1:6-10 John 1: 6-17 Verses 1 – 18 of John chapter one form the prologue to Johns Gospel, so I ought to have included verse 18 among those set for us to study, I apologise that I did not realize this to begin with. John 1:18 reads “No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. NASB “ John 1:6 John 1:6” There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. “NASB At verse six we read of a man named John sent by God. We read of his annunciation in Luke 1:5-23 and of his annunciation in Luke 1:57-80, note the prophetic description of the works of John the Baptist given by his father Zechariah in Luke 1:76 -79. "And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the lord to prepare his ways; to give to his people the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the sunrise from on high will visit us, to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." NASB St Mark begins his Gospel with the preaching of John the Baptist Mark 1:4-8: “John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. John was clothed with camels hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey. And he was preaching, and saying, "After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. "I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." NASB Note the words of Isaiah 40:3 fulfilled in Mark 1: 2-3 “As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY; THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, "MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.""NASB For more Scripture on John the Baptist go to Matthew chapter 3. All four Gospels mention John the Baptist because he was the last prophet of that former age, he was sent to usher in the present age. He was a type of Elijah who was to return to proclaim the presence of the Messiah. See Matthew 17:12-13 and 12; Mark 9:11-13. Luke omits this reference in the corresponding place in his gospel. Matt 17:11-13” And He answered and said, "Elijah is coming and will restore all things; but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist” NASB. Mark 9:11-13 “They asked Him, saying, "Why is it that the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" And He said to them, "Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt? "But I say to you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him." NASB John 1:7-9 John the Baptist was initially and sometimes mistaken for the Messiah, see John 1:20 and following :“And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." NASB Verse 8 tells us that John was not the “Light” but one who came to testify about the “Light”. This true Light, Jesus the Word, the Logos would enlighten everyone when he came into the world. Verse 10. In verse 10 we read that He,Jesus, was already in the world, so the prophecy is now news, Good News, rather than a coming event. Jesus became incarnate and entered incognito into the world which he himself had made. References: Genesis 1:1 with John 1:1 and following, also 1: John 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:15 -17. I guess we all know what the very first words in the Bible are so I will only quote the other two here. 1 John 1:1-3: “What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life. And the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us. What we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.” NASB Col 1:15-17: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities;all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” NASB |
