Bible Note: Greetings Ray! Would you do me a favor? Look at the front of Green's Literal Translation and see if you can find out which text it is based upon. I looked up the verse in all the versions I have, and only one (the TR of 1881) includes 'of God' in the verse. The TR of 1550 does not include that phrase either. Anyway, based upon the Nestle Aland text, I would translate the verse as follows: "In this, we know the love, because that One on behalf of us the life of Him He laid down, and we own on behalf of the brothers the lives to lay down." (Literal version) My smoothed out version would be: "In this, we know love because He laid down His life for us, and we owe (it) to lay down our lives for our brothers."
