Bible Note: Kalos - Your point is apt, of course, and brings to mind the angst I always feel when someone sends me an e-mail message that begins "dear hank how r u" in which the writer not only ignores the conventions of capitalization but also of punctuation. Why anyone should think that the Internet absolves him of his obligation to write standard English, including proper capitalization and punctuation, is beyond me. ...... My son, who is keenly aware of my love of books, gave me a curious little volume this Christmas with the interesting title, "Eats, Shoots and Leaves." The sub-title, "The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation," gives a clue to its content. The dust jacket blurb carries the following hilariously humorous excerpt from the book's introduction: A panda walks into a cafe. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air. .... "Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder. ..... I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up." ...... The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation. .... "PANDA. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves." ..... Why, I ask as the Forum begins a new year, should anyone exert the effort to write a post which, devoid of proper capitalization and punctuation, essentially deprives the writer of being understood? Isn't that the purpose of communication, after all -- to understand as well as to be understood? Anything less and we're merely exchanging gibberish. --Hank |
