AMPLIFIED 2015 | Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God]--he cannot be My disciple. |
Bible Question:
Hi, I understand that the NASB is the most accurate word-for-word translation in the English language, so maybe some of you can help me with this question. This verse says that Jesus taught that his followers should hate their father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters. Given that the 10 Commandments said that we are to honor our father and mother, why did Jesus violate the Law here? As I understand it, Jesus came to fulfill the Law. So why the contradiction? I have looked up this question in the archives and have not seen a satisfactory answer. It was mnetioned that "hate" may be used as a comparative value. But having a face-value approach to the Bible, I feel that if Jesus had meant "does not love Me more," then he would have said so. Can anyone help? seeking4truth |
Bible Answer: It is all in the translation. Dear soul, if you are really seaking for truth, then keep this great truth in mind. Though diverse passages in scripture may at times seem a contridiction to our unlearned mind, the Holy Bible IS THE WORD OF GOD. It does not contradict itself. THOUGH MANY WILL DISSAGREE, THERE ARE NO ERRORS THEREIN! THE ONLY ERRORS WHERE THE (KJV)BIBLE IS CONCERNED, RESIDE BETWEEN THE EARS OF THOSE WHO DISAGREE. The way we understand a particular passage may make it seem it does err, but it does not. In the passage you quote the word "hate" simply means "to love less." The bible also says to honor thy father and mother, yet there is a passage that states "And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven." I would lovingly suggest that if you are sincere where your screen name is concerned, and that if you never, ever do anything else in your entire life that is worthwile, you do this one thing... (see 2Ti 2:15.) For if you follow this simple instruction, I promice that you will one day be richer than you can now imagine. There are those who seek, but never find. There are those who seek, and due to a lack of knowledge are led to the slaughter. Jesus said, "I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me." Mat 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: What more can be said? In Christ George |
