NASB | Matthew 9:13 "But go and learn what this means: 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT SACRIFICE,' for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 9:13 "Go and learn what this [Scripture] means: 'I DESIRE COMPASSION [for those in distress], AND NOT [animal] SACRIFICE,' for I did not come to call [to repentance] the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to change], but sinners [those who recognize their sin and actively seek forgiveness]." [Hos 6:6; Mark 2:17; Luke 5:32] |
Bible Question:
I have still been struggling in pulling this verse apart. I can't see the real meaning behind, : 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT SACRIFICE,' is that Jesus saying he wants mercy/compassion and not sacrifice? Or is that the question we must ask God? And what exactly is this 'sacrifice' that he mentions...? |
Bible Answer: Greetings SMO, In Matthew 9:13 when Jesus says "Go and learn what this means: "I desire mercy and not sacrifice", I personally interpret this as saying: "Don't just follow the requirements of the law because it is required of you, but do what is right to others out of the love and compassion from your heart." That is how I would best explain that verse. Blessings to you, Makarios |
