AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 9:13 "Go and learn what this [Scripture] means: 'I DESIRE COMPASSION [for those in distress], AND NOT [animal] SACRIFICE,' for I did not come to call [to repentance] the [self-proclaimed] righteous [who see no need to change], but sinners [those who recognize their sin and actively seek forgiveness]." Bible Question:
I have still been struggling in pulling this verse apart. I can't see the real meaning behind, : 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND NOT SACRIFICE,' is that Jesus saying he wants mercy/compassion and not sacrifice? Or is that the question we must ask God? And what exactly is this 'sacrifice' that he mentions...? |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... Hos 6:1-11 (vs 6); Mat 9:10-13 (vs 13), 12:1-9 (vs 7) ... SMO, God's day to you, I have listed the three passages that talk about this. The sacrifice for some, even most, was just going through the motions. It was the sacrifices described in the Law. He also rather have obedience than sacrifice (1 Sam 15:22, Jer 44:23). It isn't that He didn't want sacrifice ... His sacrifice made it so we no longer had to sacrifice (Heb 9-10) ... mercy/compassion and obedience were more important. I hope I answered your question, Searcher |
