AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 3:11 ¶ "As for me, I baptize you with water because of [your] repentance [that is, because you are willing to change your inner self--your old way of thinking, regret your sin and live a changed life], but He (the Messiah) who is coming after me is mightier [more powerful, more noble] than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to remove [even as His slave]; He will baptize you [who truly repent] with the Holy Spirit and [you who remain unrepentant] with fire (judgment). Subject: Can we be baptized with the Holy Ghost? |
Bible Note: Dear Nancy, So, when you say "heart" you mean "spirit?" But you capitalized "Spirit." The choice of our words can create clarity or confusion. (1 Corinthians 14:8-9) John 16:13 is, indeed, an explanation of the illuminating work of the Holy Spirit in the redeemed. We see Paul speaking in more detail on this in 1 Corinthians 2. There is, indeed, truth that penetrates. Paul calls it "epignosis" or "deep truth." He wrote, "For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the KNOWLEDGE of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the KNOWLEDGE of God." (Colossians 1:9-10 KJV, my emphasis) Through the salvific work of the Holy Spirit we are made new creatures able to understand the Truth (1 Corinthians 2:14; cf. Hebrews 10:32). You wrote, "I am not interested in arguing like this, because it borders on blaspheming the Holy Spirit." First, being asked to provide Biblical support for your assertions in the forum is part of what you agreed to when joining. Second, if our beliefs are based in the Word, we should be happy to instruct others as the Holy Spirit has instructed us. If we are unable to clearly state our understanding, then we simply need greater study, so that we can "give an answer to any man." That is something we are all working on. Third, the Holy Spirit teaches the Word and only the Word. Any assertion about Him as revealed in the Word is not blasphemous. Fourth, your participation is not coerced. You might very well be able to explain things from a perspective which we lack. We are not unwilling to be instructed or corrected by the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:14-17). We hope that you will participate in a way that will benefit us all and bring God glory. In Him, Doc |
