Bible Note: Greetings MJH! I found this quote on the site as well: "Members of the Jerusalem School of Synoptic Research have learned that the most effective way to approach a passage from the synoptic gospels is, first, to put its Greek text into Hebrew, then, study the resultant Hebrew reconstruction in light of first-century Jewish exegesis." I have a serious problem with this approach. Regardless of what language Jesus normally spoke, the text of the inspired New Testment was written in Greek. There is historical evidence that Matthew wrote something in Hebrew, but it is quite clear that the New Testament was written in Greek. Thus, one must examine the text as we have it, not as one thinks it might have been if written in Hebrew. My reading of this site leaves me with this impression thus far - that there are nuggets of interesting facts, but too much emphasis on a pet theory. At worst, this theory ignores Divine inspiration completly. At best, it assumes that the authors of Scripture were unable to 'think' in Greek and simply reproduced Hebrew thought in Greek words. Personally, I think this is a major mistake. To be sure, there are elements of Hebrew culture that bring tremendous light to our understanding of Scripture. However, God was more than able to convey His message in Greek, as well as any other language that He might have chosen! ;-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
