Bible Question: Thanks, that information is very interesting. I can't figure out why the locals would not have understood Aramic if they spoke it. I just read the form of Aramic it was written vertically rather than horizontally and this confused the locals. Maybe their current form of Aramic was written horizontally? Maybe information that detailed is just not available to us? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Chusarcik! May I add a comment about why the locals could not interpret the writing on the wall? It is clear that the phrase was written in Aramaic. It is likely that there were some in the empire who could read Aramaic. However, they had no point of reference from which to interpret the phrase. Who was numbered? Who was weighed? What was to be divided? I don't believe that they knew the answers to these question, and even if they did, they probably would not have gone to the king and said, 'Hey, you have been found wanting'! :-) Daniel understood the meaning because God revealed to him exactly who He was talking about and Daniel had enough courage to give the meaning of the message without watering it down. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
