Bible Question:
Mat 5:27 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' Mat 5:28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. I have a question for these two verses. Is it possible that Jesus is saying that you shouldnt even look at your own wife lustfully? Becouse he just says a "woman". Cant that mean any woman? Im not married but i have a "friend" and if i cant look at her lustfully, im afraid i can never be in a relationship, ever. |
Bible Answer: KumKum, Jesus is saying that the old covenant was one of action, but the covenant in Him is one both of action and attitude. He is using adultery as an example of that. He requires that we not only refrain from adultery but the thought/attitude of it. I have no idea why this premise is driving so many to squabble like children. With regards to your friend, you shouldnt let this idea deter you from a good and proper relationship when you find one. We are all sinners and strive not to sin, yet still we fall. I'm sure there are many married men (and women) who have lustful thoughts about people who are not their spouses. Christ wants us to adjust that attitude so that we can be better husbands. If you apply your logic to all other sins, you will probably find that there will be very few things you can do or places you can go for fear of having the wrong attitude. |
