Bible Note: Whew, Val... if God is not providentially in control of the very last molecule in the universe, I'd question that He was God at all. Furthermore, if He isn't in control, then He'd never be able to make a promise... He'd only be able to express His hopes! One of the cool things about being part of a confessional church, is that so many of these simple questions about God have already been summarized from Scripture. Our confessions are not infallible or inspired as is the Word, but they draw their authority from Scripture alone (sola Scriptura). "Nothing happens by chance or outside the sphere of God's providence. As God is the First Cause of all events, they happen immutably and infallibly according to His foreknowledge and decree, to which they stand related. Yet by His providence God so controls them, that second causes, operating either as fixed laws, or freely, or in dependence upon other causes, play their part in bringing them about. (Genesis 8:22; Proverbs 16:33; Acts 2:23)" --London Baptist Confession of Faith 1689 (chapter 5, paragraph 2) Yes, Val, we live in a fallen world... but we have a God who is sovereign even over fallen worlds! There is not one single thing that can happen to a believer that God does not carefully choreograph for His glory and the believer's ultimate good (Genesis 50:20; Psalm 119:71; Romans 8:28).
